Mechanical Engineer — Materials & Prototyping

Role

Mechanical Engineer — Materials & Prototyping is a hands-on engineering role to help build a 10 kW pilot and a 100 kW system. The position requires strong CAD, procurement, prototyping, assembly, testing, and materials selection. Experience with rotating systems is a plus.

Company

Spiral Hydrogen is developing a novel electrolyzer design aimed at delivering cheap green hydrogen. The company has validated its core design, protected IP, and secured VC funding, and is preparing for a pilot.

What you’ll do

• Build and maintain 3D CAD assemblies for stack components, fixtures, and test setups.
• Turn rough concepts into manufacturable parts.
• Procure parts, materials, tools, and supplier quotes.
• Assemble prototypes and test rigs in the workshop and lab.
• Test hardware, identify failures, and improve the design.
• Consider tolerances, sealing, leakage, corrosion, fatigue, wear, and manufacturability.
• Select materials that withstand the electrochemical and mechanical environment.

What we’re looking for

• Strong CAD skills and experience designing mechanical parts.
• Experience with rotating systems, bearings, shafts, seals, wobble, vibration, balancing, pumps, motors, or turbomachinery.
• Hands-on prototyping experience: built, assembled, modified, tested, or repaired hardware.
• Fluid dynamics or CFD intuition.
• Practical materials knowledge, especially metals, polymers, coatings, corrosion, or electrochemical environments.
• Ability to move quickly and source parts, talk to suppliers, and compare options.
• High agency and clear communication with good teamwork.

Nice to have

• Experience with electrolyzers, batteries, fuel cells, electrochemical systems, or chemical/process equipment.
• Experience with alkaline environments and corrosive fluids.
• Experience spanning both small prototypes and larger industrial hardware.
