Overview
Avionics Systems Engineer – Avionics at D-Orbit. The role focuses on the design, development, validation, and qualification of the Electrical Power Subsystem (EPS) for space missions. The technical authority for EPS, leading subsystem architecture, component selection, power budgeting, and cross-functional coordination throughout the project lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the definition, development, and ownership of EPS architecture (power generation, energy storage, power conditioning, distribution).
- Define and manage EPS requirements with full traceability from mission specifications to unit level.
- Perform power budgets, operational modes, derating, and design margins for space missions.
- Ensure EPS complies with radiation, thermal, redundancy, and reliability constraints of space environments.
- Coordinate design, implementation, and verification of EPS units (solar arrays, batteries, PCDUs, regulators, power converters, harnessing, monitoring electronics).
- Guide component selection and qualification for mission constraints and standards.
- Prepare technical documentation and lead procurement for EPS equipment (SoWs, supplier proposals, TRBs/MRBs).
- Serve as main technical interface with suppliers to align requirements, performance, schedule, and quality.
- Define subsystem verification plans, test specifications, and acceptance criteria.
- Support AIV and AIT activities at unit, subsystem, and system levels, including functional and environmental testing.
- Review test procedures/reports and ensure proper anomaly closure.
- Collaborate with system engineering, thermal, mechanical, avionics, and mission analysis teams for seamless EPS integration.
- Support major program reviews (SRR, PDR, CDR, TRR, ORR) for readiness and compliance.
Required Skills & Knowledge
- Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related field.
- 7+ years in space/automotive industries; space experience strongly preferred.
- Deep knowledge of power electronics, batteries, solar arrays, DC/DC converters, PCDUs, energy storage tech.
- Understanding of radiation effects, derating, reliability, and EEE component selection.
- Strong analytical, documentation, and system-level problem-solving skills.
- Fluent English (written and spoken); Italian is a plus.
- Knowledge of AI tools is desired.
Preferred Experience
- Experience as Subsystem Lead or Technical Lead on space projects.
- Familiarity with ECSS standards, space-grade procurement, qualification processes.
- Knowledge of thermal interactions, electromechanical integration, and harness design.
- Background in EPS or avionics subsystem mission operations.
- Proactive, team-oriented, capable of independent work.
