Role: As a Digital Signal Processing (DSP) Engineer, you will translate advanced communication theory into practical hardware implementations for cutting-edge optical communication systems. This role is well-suited for a recent PhD graduate or nearing completion, looking to apply academic expertise to high-impact, space-bound hardware.
What you’ll do
- Algorithm Development: Design and simulate DSP and Forward Error Correction (FEC) algorithms in floating-point and fixed-point precision to optimize link performance, functionality, and power efficiency.
- Hardware Co-Design: Collaborate with FPGA engineering to produce fixed-point models and specifications for RTL implementation.
- System Modeling: Develop end-to-end models of analog RF and optical components (lasers, modulators, photodetectors, amplifiers) to evaluate performance under real-world conditions.
- Cross-Functional Integration: Work with optical testing and firmware teams to create robust, automated algorithms for transceiver calibration, beam alignment, and run-time optimization in dynamic space environments.
- Validation & Testing: Validate models against hardware data and iterate designs based on lab results.
- Documentation: Document algorithm architectures, simulations, and fixed-point specifications.
Who you are
- Education: Postdoctoral researcher or nearing completion with a PhD in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Telecommunications, Physics, or related field with focus on DSP or digital communications. Industry experience considered.
- Simulation Mastery: Extensive experience with MATLAB and Simulink for modeling and algorithm development.
- Theoretical Grounding: Strong foundation in digital communication theory, modulation, noise modeling, and error-correction techniques.
- Fixed-Point Familiarity: Experience converting floating-point algorithms to fixed-point for FPGA/ASIC implementation.
- Coding Skills: Proficiency in C/C++ or Python is a plus.
- Problem-Solving: Analytical mindset with ability to tackle complex engineering challenges.
- Soft Skills: Clear technical communication, collaborative, and passionate about space technology and free-space optics.

Compensation: 75,000 - 90,000 EUR per year (Galway) or 75,000 - 90,000 EUR per year (Cork).
