Mechatronics (Electromechanical) Maintenance Technician
ABOUT US
tozero is Europe’s leading deep-tech startup in lithium-ion battery recycling, driving decarbonization and the circular economy through innovative material recovery solutions.
We are on a mission to recover critical materials from end-of-life batteries and build a cleaner, more sustainable future.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
As an electrical and/or mechatronics technician, you will be the technical backbone of our recycling plant. This role is for a true hands-on professional with proven experience in both mechanical and electrical domains, capable of working independently in a demanding industrial environment, including high-voltage systems and complex equipment.
You will work directly on the shop floor, performing installations, maintenance, troubleshooting, and supporting production during ramp-up and scale-up phases.
In this role, you will play a key part in ensuring plant reliability, uptime, and safe operations, contributing directly to the build-up and continuous improvement of our production site. Your cross-functional expertise will make you a critical pillar of the maintenance and operations team.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Mechanical
- Installation & Assembly: Independently install, assemble, and commission a wide range of industrial equipment, machinery units, and complex piping systems.
- Modifications & Upgrades: Execute technical modifications and plant improvements to optimize process performance and equipment integration.
- Equipment Maintenance: Maintain, align, and troubleshoot pumps, motors, gearboxes, valves, and heavy process equipment.
- Spare Parts Management: Identify, replace, and manage critical spare parts to ensure rapid recovery and minimal downtime.
- Preventive Care: Execute and optimize preventive and corrective maintenance schedules across all mechanical assets.
- Fabrication: Perform welding, machining, and metal fabrication as required for repairs or bespoke plant adjustments.
- Diagnostics: Diagnose mechanical wear and tear, implementing sustainable technical solutions to extend equipment life.
Electrical
- High-Voltage & Safety: Safely manage high-voltage systems and strictly enforce electrical safety (LOTO) and compliance.
- Installation & Power: Install, wire, and commission electrical systems, control cabinets, and high-voltage power distribution.
- Infrastructure: Implement cable routing, conduits, and tray systems for power and signal lines.
- Instrumentation: Maintain and calibrate sensors and actuators to ensure accurate process feedback.
- Diagnostics & Upgrades: Perform structured fault-finding and modify control logic or panels to improve plant automation.
General Maintenance and Ownership
- Diagnose complex faults across mechanical and electrical systems and implement sustainable solutions
- Develop and actively execute preventive maintenance plans from scratch to improve equipment reliability and uptime
- Support installation, commissioning, and upgrades of new equipment and production systems
- Ensure strict compliance with safety standards (LOTO, high-voltage procedures, etc.)
- Maintain clear and accurate technical documentation
- Act as a reliable go-to technician on the shop floor, supporting operations with minimal supervision
- Contribute to and actively improve the maintenance workshop (tools, equipment, layout, and processes), bringing in practical ideas to increase efficiency, organization, and overall maintenance effectiveness
Plant Operations and Production Support
- Contribute hands-on to commissioning, plant modifications, and installation of new production lines
- Support commissioning and ramp-up activities by operating equipment, handling materials, and assisting daily plant operations as needed, ensuring safe and efficient execution
- Maintain high standards of safety, housekeeping, and compliance, while proactively improving equipment reliability, production processes, and site safety
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Completed vocational training as a Mechatronics Technician, Industrial Electrician, or equivalent
- Several years of proven industrial experience in both mechanical and electrical maintenance
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, P&IDs, and electrical schematics
- Demonstrated ability to work independently across disciplines (not specialized in only one area)
- Hands-on experience with high-voltage systems (required)
- Strong understanding of industrial equipment, piping systems, and electrical infrastructure
- Experience with PLC-based systems and industrial automation is a strong advantage
WHAT WE EXPECT
- You are a doer, not a trainee, and can execute safely and independently without constant guidance
- Strong ownership mindset with consistent, reliable delivery
- Comfortable switching between mechanical and electrical work as needed
- High awareness of safety standards, especially in high-voltage environments
- Practical, solution-oriented mindset suited for a fast-paced industrial startup environment
- Flexibility: Willingness and ability to work in a shift system to support operations.
